COMMON PESTS
Spiders
In many cases the presence of a few spiders is not a problem and requires no specific action. However, a lot of spiders can be a serious nuisance and can pose a health threat to children and to the elderly. There are about 35,000 known species of spiders in the world, and in most states in the U. S. there are about 400 species. Spiders are predators, which feed on living prey and thus are a good indication of other small pests that may be present in or around your home. Spiders along with snakes are the most commonly feared creatures.
Most are harmless, but in the U. S., the most poisonous spiders are the Brown Recluse and the Black Widow. They are mostly shy, but will bite if provoked and cause severe injury or even death. Since spiders are predators, which feed mostly on insects, a homeowner’s main focus should be on discouraging spiders’ prey. Clear away bushes, weeds and grass from around your homes foundation to discourage insect and spider activity. Move woodpiles away from the house. Check patio furniture, firewood, cut flowers and other items prior to bringing them indoors to remove any “hitchhiking” pests. You should wear thick gloves, coveralls and stout shoes when handling firewood, clearing debris, etc; in areas suspected of harboring dangerous spiders.
Spiders that trap prey require different control methods than hunting spiders. Invading spiders need different treatment than permanently resident spiders. SAWYER service technicians are trained to know which treatment to use for each type of infestation for best results. In some cases control is difficult and may require multiple treatments.
